If you're a fan of tze-char style hor fun or bee hoon, you'll definitely love the signature white bee hoon aka 'Bai Mi Fen' at this eating house. It's located at a coffee shop opposite the road from Sembawang Shopping Centre and the signboard is super big and obvious: "白米粉" in large font. The location is a little out of the way so I suggest just hopping onto their shuttle buses that goes around the Yishun/Woodlands/Sembawang areas (looping at SSC). You can board the bus from Yishun or Sembawang MRT Stations as well as various bus stops in Woodlands area. For more info on the free shuttle bus, click here.
So what's so great about this Sembawang Bai Mi Fen? Well, it's their signature dish, duh. :) Of course there are other dishes like fish head curry, seafood etc, but for first timers, just order the Bai Mi Fen (priced at $4, 7, 10, 12). The first time CC and I tried it, we ordered the Ngor Giang ($10) as well. Super yummy and a must-try!
Today, we tried their version of the prawn paste chicken wings. They're a little too dry and hard in texture, and doesn't taste as good as Ban Leong Wah Hoe's. Ok back to Sembawang Bai Mi Fen, there are also other side dishes you can order, like prawn fritters, calamari, and even french fries. Tried their sambal kang kong, wasn't too oily too. We also ordered their barley and lime juice drinks.
And.. this is very important. Their Chilli gravy is to die for. I don't know how to explain it to you but believe me when I say the combination of it with the bai mi fen is... heavenly. If you dine at the coffee shop itself, you're free to take as much Chilli as you want. But for each take-away portion of the mi fen, you only get 1-2 mini plate servings of the Chilli. The very first time I came here to order with Guang, we found out that the stall actually charges more for extra servings of it! Precious Chilli indeed...
Another thing to be prepared for are the long queues. My suggestion is to reach 1 hour before dinner time, that is around 5-5.30pm. Today we reached earlier at 5pm and thankfully didn't have to queue up. However, we still had to wait around 20-30 minutes for the food to arrive. Never mind, because we know that the food is going to be yummylicious! :)) photos galore!
Sweet potato leaves vegetables. Our absolute favourite! Fried in sambal chilli style.
Our bai mi fen, $7 portion. Good for 2 pax. :)
The usual bai mi fen has seafood ingredients like prawns and squids, but you can request it to be all-meat instead.
After ordering, take a seat and wait for your food to be served. Yes, you have to wait twice (First: Waiting along the road outside the coffee shop, if you can't find a table, and secondly, after you've ordered and are seated). But, the wait is worth it, trust me. :)
By the way, they even have a Facebook page. :D
